NOVICA, in association with National Geographic, searches the world to work directly with the finest artisan designers. Handmade by Ashis Kumar Biswas “Hello, my name is Ashis Kumar Biswas, and I was born on June 30, 1969, in Thakurnagar, West Bengal. My father was in the police force, and he would often be transferred to different districts within the state. This gave me the opportunity to learn about different cultures and traditions. It also meant I had to change schools every couple of years, which gave me the chance to make lots of friends. “I have a Masters in Economics, but it was always my hobby to collect works of art. And though I was not a professional artist, I sculpted different pieces. I soon realized I could contribute to my country’s economy by making the effort to craft traditional pieces. All in all, putting all these factors together motivated me to change professions. “I became fully dedicated to arts and crafts after completing my studies. My designs are traditional in essence, but I incorporate more contemporary stylizations, making my products more original. My pieces are unique and they have been accepted well, which has afforded me the opportunity to offer more jobs to talented artisans to help me in my workshop. “I take great interest in what is trendy and I apply it to my work. I design a variety of items, including masks, sculptures and utilitarian products. Other than classic Indian styles, I also admire the artistic traditions of Mohenjetaro, Egypt, Bengal folk, etc. “Crafting ceramic works of art has been a wonderful experience for me, and working alongside so many dedicated artists motives me. Over the years I have participated in many exhibitions, and their tremendous response keeps me going. “I am also a social worker and I am involved with different NGOs. I am part of the Blood Donation Camp, AIDS Seminar. And through my work, I am constantly creating employment opportunities by commissioning other artisans. “I am very excited to be a part of Novica, and I hope our relationship lasts for a long time.”
